The
EASe CD #1 was created in 1996 by Vision Audio Inc. as a way to bring Electronic
Auditory Stimulation technology to the general public. It is comprised of up tempo,
emotionally positive, instrumental music encoded with high frequency burst equalization.
This results in music that is mostly soft or dull with very short random bursts
of high frequency information like cymbals. These bursts of high frequency energy
help the brain to habituate to common noise.
Some children, because of
a brain injury either before, during or after birth, are unable to cope with the
range of sound volume that average people take for granted. These children become
ultra-sensitive to sounds, even low volume sounds. When these children are 18
months and younger, they exhibit startle reflexes to a vacuum cleaner in the next
room or many other normal acoustic events. By the time they reach three or four
years old, some of these children appear deaf, and have developed defensive mechanisms
to protect them from unbearable noise. However, their auditory defensiveness is
not proper habituation. It is a global "shut down" that isolates them
from the world and prevents them from acquiring language. In many cases these
children are diagnosed as "autistic". In other, milder cases the child
may be diagnosed with Attention Deficit disorder. In yet milder cases a child
may not be identifiable as having any auditory issues but may not be achieving
the academic levels that his intellect would indicate. Other individuals have
become ultra-sensitive to sound for many other reasons such as brain tumor surgery.
It has been speculated that as many as 20% of the general population is over or
ultra-sensitive to common noise.
The EASe (Electronic Auditory Stimulation effect) compact disc series is a music
product that is easy to use the in the home by parents, employing the simplest
of tools such as a portable compact disc player and high quality headphones. The
EASe CDs contain music that has been modified by a filtering system that
removes the upper frequencies for the majority of the listening time (creating
a soft, somewhat muddy sound) and then randomly and transiently boosts the high
frequencies to much higher than nominal levels. This transient auditory stimulation
has the effect of stimulating (and in doing so, helping to organize) the auditory
areas of the brain, but because it is short in duration, does not elicit a defensive
response. Eventually the listener acclimates to the presence of sound and is able
to perceive it more normally.
It is important to note that EASe is not
a cure for anything, especially ADD, Autism, ADHD, etc. EASe can help DESENSITIZE
an individual to common noise thereby allowing other methods of intervention to
be more effective. We frequently see improvements in a child such as improved
language, eye contact, affection, balance, etc. However these secondary effects
of EASe are a result of the child's ability to experience the world through their
now uncluttered senses and the resulting neurological growth not as a direct result
of EASe.
